The Swimmer

about

I always felt I was a strong swimmer. One summer vacation we were on Martha's Vineyard, enjoying the big waves on North Beach. My sister was very young, and for some strange reason my father walked into the water with her in his arms. It was fine and fun but the surf was too rough, the waves too big. Suddenly, a great wave knocked her down to the sand, and in the blink of an eye the undertow slipped her away. Dad cried out to me, help, we have to find her. I put my body underwater against the sand and searched, trying to zigzag across the whole area but it was fruitless. I was suddenly filled with a terrible horror. I resurfaced and made eye contact and knew my Dad hadn't found her either. Again I went under, searching, desperately trying to see through the thunderous waves that churned the salty water and made opaque clouds of sand that filled my nose and ears. It went on forever, this agony. I stayed underwater searching until my lungs felt like they would burst. But then I looked to him and she was in his arms again, spitting up water, and it was over. She was safe. I did not return to the water.
